Chapter Twenty-Three

“THAT WAS QUITE THE crowd tonight.” Warbler moaned as he plopped down on Miranda’s sofa.

“You just aren’t used to serving hot chocolate and wine at the same time, Warbler.” Hick heckled him.

“I’m not used to it at all. Give me my birds and squirrels any day. They chatter and I pretend to know what they are saying. It’s different with customers; I have to remember their order. Never do that to me again, Jezabelle—leave me alone with your patrons.” Mr. Warbler wiped his brow.

“And me.” Hick laughed. “I thought he would start tweeting at them—and not the internet kind of tweet. Let’s all tweet like the birdies tweet.”

“It’s comfy in the basement too. Come on down and let’s get sleuthing,” Miranda invited.

“We’ve already been sleuthing,” Jezabelle informed the group.

“Without me?” Phoebe complained.

“You were singing with the choir and trying to avoid Sigfried,” Lizzy reminded her.

“Wow, this is beautiful, Miranda,” Phoebe remarked, touching the beautiful stone walls that were finished with a white shimmery coating. A fireplace stood at one end of the large family room in the basement. The pattern of the stone on the fireplace was different than the walls; each stone had an inspirational word carved into its middle section. The floors were two different types of brick, laid out in a walkway, meandering through the basement and into the other rooms. The ceiling was finished with white tin tile, which had flower indentations in the middle of each tile.

“And it is dry down here, not moldy or musty. How did you pull that off?” Mr. Warbler asked.

“I have a dehumidifier in the summer, but I have had no moisture. They must have done something to the outside to seal it. After all, they weren’t the Brilliant brothers for nothing. And none of the residents touched this or changed anything, it appears. It is amazing all our houses survived the wear and tear of people who didn’t know their history. Come over here.” Miranda walked down one of the hallways.

When the group followed her, they found the carved nativity scene in the wall of the hallway.

“This is where I found my glass block. See here is the indentation where it sat.” She pointed to the square, empty two-by-two hole.

Jezabelle studied the scene. “Was our glass block the only thing that was loose in this carving?” She pulled and poked at the Wise Men carved on the wall.

“It is. The block was a gift one of the wise men held in his hand. See—the gifts of the other Wise Men are carved but not loose, and each shepherd has something different, but not a block of glass. The gifts are frankincense and myrrh. That is why I poked at the glass block and found it came out. It didn’t fit with frankincense and myrrh. But then I thought perhaps they were going to put the names on the Wise Men and instead changed to the gift names.” Miranda stepped back away from the wall to let the others get a closer look.
